For many survivors of domestic abuse, reaching the point of separation is only one part of an incredibly difficult journey. One of the most challenging steps that often follows is navigating the Family Court system. Time and time again, survivors tell us how overwhelming, confusing, and intimidating this process can be.
At FLAG DV, we have listened. And today, we’re incredibly proud to announce a brand-new strand of our service: an online course designed specifically to support survivors of domestic abuse preparing for, or currently going through, Family Court.
This new project has been made possible thanks to dedicated funding that allows us to expand our support and reach many more people who need guidance, clarity, and emotional reassurance.
Hayley Tarrant, FLAG DV Service Manager and lead facilitator for the course, shares:
“We are very happy to be able to share our knowledge and be in a position to help more victims. We have been incredibly lucky to have received funding to be able to develop this course, which in turn allows us to support more victims of domestic abuse.”
Why This Course Matters
Family Court can be a frightening experience. Survivors must manage legal jargon, uncertainty about what will happen next, and the emotional pressure of revisiting difficult experiences, all while trying to protect their children and themselves.
Many survivors tell us they feel unprepared, anxious, or simply lost.
This new course was created to change that.
Designed as a 4-part online training programme, it aims to:
- Reduce fear and uncertainty
- Replace confusion with clear, accessible information
- Build confidence step-by-step
- Equip survivors with practical skills they can use
- Offer grounding techniques and emotional support
- Help participants feel safer, calmer, and more prepared
We believe survivors deserve compassion, clarity, and empowerment, especially during something as daunting as Family Court. This course is one more way we’re working to provide that.
Who the Course Is For
This course is for survivors of domestic abuse who are:
- Preparing for Family Court
- Currently involved in proceedings
- Feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or worried about the process
- Wanting clear information, emotional support, and a safe learning space
What the Course Covers
Across four online sessions, participants will learn:
- What post-separation abuse is
- What happens in Family Court
- Who is in the courtroom and what their roles are
- Common court terms explained in plain language
- How to prepare and present their case effectively
- Strategies to manage anxiety and courtroom nerves
- Their rights in court, including how to access Special Measures
Each session is designed to be accessible, supportive, and empowering.
When the Course Starts
We anticipate launching the first course in the New Year, with sessions expected to begin in January 2026.
Final dates will be confirmed based on demand so that we can ensure groups are kept to an appropriate size and that survivors who need support most urgently are prioritised.
How to Register Your Interest
If you would like to attend, you can join our Expression of Interest list. Those on this list will receive priority notification as soon as dates open for registration.
Update on our online Family Court group course – January 2026
We recently opened an expression of interest for our new online Family Court group course.
The response has been extraordinary. Interest has been over 200 times higher than anticipated, far exceeding what our current funding allows us to deliver.
This level of demand is highly unusual for a new programme and clearly highlights the significant unmet need for specialist support for survivors navigating the family court process in our area.
To ensure we can properly manage and respond to the expressions of interest already received, we have temporarily closed the form while we review options to expand the programme safely through additional funding.
We’ll share updates as this work develops.
