What is Family court support?

At FLAG DV, we recognising the daunting nature of navigating the family court system, especially for those experiencing domestic abuse. Abuse doesn’t end once a survivor is safe, ongoing abuse happens through the family court and the process can be re-traumatising. Over the past 3 years FLAG DV has seen an increase in clients coming back for more support and advice going through court as they find they do not qualify for legal aid but struggle to navigate the complicated proceedings alone, often without any emotional support due to their risk being lower and no longer qualifying for IDVA or Domestic abuse outreach support.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce our new project focused on providing ongoing one-to-one support to individuals facing legal proceedings related to domestic abuse.

The role involves offering practical, emotional, and moral support to individuals navigating the family court system as victims of domestic abuse. The primary objective is to support clients throughout each stage of their family court proceedings, ensuring they feel empowered and have their voices heard.

To qualify for support the client must have a court case in Berkshire, be over 18 years old and experiencing domestic abuse. At this early stage we are only able to accept referrals from an agency or professional, such as a councillor or medical professional. We ask that as professionals, you only refer cases where domestic abuse has been or is present using your professional judgement or risk assessment of your own.
